What is a Djellaba and where does this clothing come from?
A djellaba (also called a kaftan, abaya, gandoura, kandora , or qamis ) is a long, flowing robe traditionally worn by men and women in North Africa and the Middle East. The djellaba is beloved for its comfort, warmth, and modesty, and is worn in both Morocco and Algeria as both everyday and festive attire .
Our Djellabas are handmade and combine traditional design with modern luxury : they have three-quarter sleeves, an elegant yet timeless design and are made from high-quality fabrics making them suitable as prayer wear , for Eid celebrations or simply as stylish Islamic clothing.
What sets TheDjellaba apart from other brands?
TheDjellaba was founded in 2021 by two young Dutch entrepreneurs and is part of the growing trend of Arabic casual wear in Europe. Our goal is to make Arabic men's fashion accessible to all of Europe.
While many clothing brands offer men's djellabas only as a sideline, we make the djellaba our main product and the sole focus of our brand. We specialize in men's djellabas and build our collection entirely around this traditional garment.
Our djellabas are handmade in Morocco by experienced artisans with craftsmanship that goes back generations. This ensures authentic details, high-quality workmanship, and genuine quality.

How do you wear a Djellaba and for what occasions is it suitable?
A djellaba is a versatile garment. Its loose fit makes it comfortable for everyday wear, as well as for prayer and during Islamic holidays.
Our djellabas have a timeless design and neutral colors , making them easy to pair with sandals or leather shoes. Thanks to the high-quality fabric and refined finish, you can also wear a djellaba as a stylish kaftan or qamis for weddings or family gatherings.
In winter you can easily combine the djellaba with a net cardigan over it or a shirt underneath , making it also suitable for colder days
How do I choose the right size?
Our djellabas are designed to fit loosely; the size is primarily based on body height. As a guide, we use the following djellaba lengths:
- S (135 cm) – suitable for persons up to approximately 177 cm in height.
- M (140–145 cm) – suitable for people from approximately 177–188 cm.
- L (150 cm) – suitable for persons taller than 188 cm.
Because this is just a guide, we recommend consulting the size guide on the product pages and emailing our customer service if you have any doubts. This way, you can be sure your djellaba or kandora fits comfortably.
What materials are your djellabas made of and how do I care for them?
Our djellabas are handmade from 80% viscose, 19% linen, and 1% polyamide . This creates a soft, breathable fabric with a luxurious feel.
The djellaba has two pockets :
- one open front pocket for easy access to your trouser pockets,
- and one closed pocket , handy for your phone or keys, for example.
We recommend hand washing the djellaba or washing it on a delicate cycle in cold water to keep the embroidery and fabric in top condition. Iron on a low heat and avoid the dryer.
Do you offer customization or personalization?
We currently offer djellabas and kandoras in standard sizes (S, M, and L). We do not yet offer personalized embroidery or customization. Please contact customer service if you have any specific requests; we may be able to incorporate them into our collection in the future.
